Transitioning to Residency

Understanding the rigors and expectations of your individual residency program is the best way to prepare for this transition. Talk to current residents and try to gain insight into the physical and emotional challenges as well as the rewards of your training program. Medical school has taught you the basics; residency will teach you how to be a doctor. You will not know everything, but there are ways for you to be better prepared. Always keep in mind that family medicine training will prepare you to provide patients with a personal medical home where they can receive comprehensive care within the context of a continuing relationship.
