National Primary Care Week

October 10-14, 2011

National Primary Care Week (NPCW) takes place annually and is sponsored by American Medical Student Association (AMSA). The 2011 NPCW is co-sponsored by Primary Care Progress. This year's theme is "Innovations in Primary Care".

Medical schools across the country are encouraged to organize events that focus on primary care, and FMIGs are encouraged to collaborate with AMSA chapters and other campus groups to represent and share family medicine during this week.

PCMH Materials for National Primary Care Week

  • View the AAFP's video about the Patient Centered Medical Home.
  • Have one of your faculty customize the AAFP PowerPoint (30-page PowerPoint file; About Downloading) on Patient Centered Medical Home and present to your FMIG.
  • Download the PCMH handout (2-page PDF file; About PDFs) and distribute to your classmates.

Other programming resources

  • Scan winning applications from the AAFP's Program of Excellence Awards for programming examples from other FMIGs.
    • The University of Vanderbilt was the 2011 winner for Promoting the Value of Primary Care. Check out what worked for its FMIG! (8-page PDF file; About PDFs)
  • Use the AAFP's "Your Future is Family Medicine" presentation materials as the framework for a program at your school.
  • Contact your state chapter to invite its support. Often, state chapters have access to family physicians in your state who could be guest speakers, or can provide other resources to support your on-campus efforts. (8-page PDF file; About PDFs)
  • Contact your FMIG Network Regional Coordinator or e-mail your region's Listserv to find out what else is going on in your area and to ask for ideas.
  • Check out AMSA's NPCW page for sample programming menu abstracts, become a NPCW coordinator and use the student leader resource center.
